Issued Mitchell Pattern Shelter Halves

Issued Mitchell Pattern Shelter Halves

Though made famous as a helmet cover during the Vietnam War, "Mitchell Pattern" started life for use on shelter halves. Adopted in 1953, these shelters can be combined to create a pup tent, each side measuring about 12.5' in length and 4.5' wide (excluding triangular portion). Though originally issued to Marines exclusively, these tarps would eventually be adopted by the Army as well. Six years after the pattern's initial use, helmet covers would finally be adopted.

Selection:

There are only two halves available, both have different amounts of fabric missing and come with slight aesthetic differences. Both shelters have numerous repairs and a few missing buttons; these are meant to be used as display pieces or for their textile material.

Shelter 1:

  • Comparatively less fabric is missing
  • Higher contrast variation

Shelter 2:

  • Comparatively more fabric is missing
  • Low contrast variation
